Ajay Banga, the former CEO of Mastercard and the US nominee to lead the World Bank, is set to visit India today as part of a three-week worldwide tour aimed at rallying support and discussing the development and climate requirements of borrowing and donor countries.Today, he is scheduled to meet Narendra Modi, the widely popular Prime Minister of India. However, prior to this encounter, Banga has tested positive for Covid-19.
The US Treasury has informed that Mr. Banga has scheduled his visit to India on March 23 and 24. During this trip, he is slated to meet the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister, Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman. According to a statement issued by the Treasury, the discussions will center around India’s development goals, the World Bank, and the economic development challenges faced globally.
Mr. Banga has garnered the backing of several nations worldwide, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Bangladesh, Colombia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Kenya, which practically guarantees his confirmation as the next President of the World Bank. India also supported Banga’s candidacy, who is a former finance and development executive and now a US citizen, shortly after his nomination in late February.
